Slovak Pastry
A layered pastry with a rich and sweet filling of apricot, strawberry, or prune preserves, topped with chopped nuts.

Ingredients
- 1 cake yeast
- 2 teaspoons sugar
- 1/2 cup warm milk
- 6 eggs separated
- 1 cup soft butter
- 3 cups sifted flour
- apricot, strawberry, or prune preserves
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 3/4 cup sugar
- chopped nuts
Steps
- 1Combine yeast, sugar, and warm milk; stir until yeast is dissolved.
- 2Stir in egg yolks and soft butter.
- 3Mix in flour to form a stiff dough.
- 4Divide dough into three pieces; roll one piece to fit the bottom of a nine-inch pan.
- 5Spread preserves on top of dough.
- 6Roll out second piece of dough and place on top of preserves.
- 7Spread preserves on top of second layer of dough and top with third piece of dough rolled out.
- 8Cover and let rise for one hour.
- 9Bake for 25 minutes at 350Β°F.
- 10Remove the pastry from the oven.
- 11Beat egg whites, vanilla, and sugar until stiff.
- 12Spread on pastry and sprinkle chopped nuts on top.
- 13Return pastry to oven and bake for 15 minutes or until light brown.
